Child and Adolescent Bipolar Disorder: An Update from the NIMH

This 4-page fact sheet that discusses the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents. Difficult to diagnose in adults, it is even more difficult to diagnose in children and teenagers as symptoms may be mistaken for normal emotions and behaviors during these turbulent years of growth. NIMH studies on treatment are also described.

DEPRESSION

This brochure gives descriptions of major depression, dysthymia, and bipolar disorder (manic depression). It lists symptoms, gives possible causes, tells how depression is diagnosed, and discusses available treatments. The brochure provides help and hope for the depressed person, family, and friends.

Depression and Suicide Facts for Older Adults

This pamphlet includes important information for older adults, their families, and primary care providers on the prevalence of depression among the elderly in the United States, the shockingly high rate of suicide in this population, and what research is showing us about the effectiveness of treatments for depression. Also included is a tear-out bookmark, or cue card, titled “Before You Say ‘I’m Fine’…” that promotes recognition of the signs of depression and encourages older adults to talk about them with their doctor.
